Freder’s father, Joh Fredersen, is the grand architect of Metropolis. When Freder rushes into his father’s office, overwrought after having witnessed the workers die at the machines that feed the city, Mr. Fredersen reacts in a very cold way. Even more so, he lays off his assistant Josaphat on the spot because he failed to inform him about the explosion or to bring him the secret plans for a workers’ revolt. Freder runs after poor Josaphat and this doesn’t go down well with his father.
